Immunity Tips for Your Family During the Coronavirus Pandemic

May 19, 2020 0 Comments
Our country and others as well are fighting against the Coronavirus which affected thousands of people worldwide. All of us are vulnerable during this pandemic that's why we should always wash our hands, clean and disinfect our houses or buildings, and when going out be sure to wear masks and other protective gears and practice social distancing to protect yourself thus slowing the spread of Coronavirus.

Aside from doing the protective measures to keep ourselves safe it is also important to keep ourselves healthy as possible by boosting your immune system and live a healthy lifestyle. Our global health situation has affected us critically, and required us all to make our well-being a top priority. We are more than happy to have Watsons as our trusted and reliable health retailer.
Here are a few Immunity Tips for your family:

Be active – Take time to exercise everyday, from hardcore to a simple exercise or yoga can definitely help improve your mood and helps strengthen your immune system to fight diseases. Make sure to allot time for exercise even for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour at least 4 times a week. Go for exercises you can do with a group like dance or cardio workouts so you can involve the whole family.

Eat right – A big factor that can spell the change in strengthening your family’s immunity is watching what you eat. A lot of people nowadays go for take outs and processed foods which is not good for our body and can weaken our immune system. We have to strengthen our body and eat foods rich in good quality protein, vitamins and minerals like vegetables such as carrots and broccoli, to flavorful spices like garlic and ginger. Additionally, you can also finish your meals with a warm cup of comfort courtesy of Nutrabliss by Watsons Tea.

I also love drinking lemonade or calamansi juice if there's no lemon available.

Get quality sleep – Getting a good night's sleep is crucial for moms and most especially to first time moms who are sleep-deprived even on lockdown or quarantine because some are still working at home while doing household chores and keeping the sanity of their household. It's still best to get adequate sleep every night to give your body rest and to manage stress levels. Manage the household’s schedule and make room for most of your activities in the morning, so the family can sleep soundly come nighttime.
Take vitamins regularly – With our situation now, some natural sources of vitamins may be hard to come by. With trips to the grocery stores becoming more challenging, know that you can also count on taking vitamins to strengthen your family’s immunity. We all know Vitamin C is critical for family members all ages. Pro tip? Stock up on your supply with Watsons Generics Ascorbic Acid.

But Vitamin C isn’t the only vitamin that can keep you healthy, Conzace Soft Gel—rich in Zinc, Vit. A, C, and E—helps boost immunity and promote healthy hair and skin. Myra E 400IU, on the other hand, is also rich with Vitamin E to help fight cell damage. For the kids, let’s help support their growth not just in height but in strength with Growee Syrupor Cherifer PGM with Zinc capsules.

Top up with supplements - Vitamin and mineral supplements can also play an important role. Like vitamins, supplements are a great way to give your health an extra boost. You can easily rely on taking supplements to help provide the nutrients you need on top of maintaining a healthy diet. Given that going back outdoors could mean exposure to environmental factors that may cause damage to our skin and body, make sure you keep that healthy glow from within with supplements like MET Tathione, NU Essence Collagen, and Organique Acai Juice. You can also keep your defenses up with supplements that harness the power of natural ingredients such as MX3 capsules and Watsons Generics Malunggay + Mangosteen.

Your must-haves at hand – Preparedness is key to protection, so make sure you have your healthessentials to help your home stay ready for anytime sickness may strike. From easy relief in yourmedicine cabinet, Ascof Forte Syrup, Strepsils, healthy choices in your pantry, Prosource Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, to the items you need to stay clean like Biogenic Ethyl Alcohol, know that you can count on these items available at Watsons.

Although changes don't happen overnight especially for those who have sedentary lifestyle for a while, but the sooner you start doing  these healthy habits and recommendations, the sooner your immune system will respond. :)

Keeping a strong immune system is your best defense against disease and to decrease the exposure of viruses especially the coronavirus. Growing Clitoria Ternatea and it's Benefits

August 11, 2019 0 Comments
Growing Clitoria Ternatea or Butterly Pea and it's Benefits

Clitoria Ternatea has a lot of names, it also called Blue Ternatea, Butterfly Pea, Asian Pigeon Wings, Blue Bell Vine, Blue Pea, Cordofan Pea and Darwin pea. It is an edible herbal plant that has a lot of benefits to our body. I've searched online for the benefits of Butterfly Pea and I was really amazed how this perennial plant have numerous benefits like memory enhancer, brain booster, improves eyesight, diuretic, analgesic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic, anti-diabetic, anti-asthmatic, anti-anxiety and depression. I think there are a lot more benefits and medicinal use if you do an intensive research about this the Clitoria Ternatea.

After knowing its benefits, I wanted to have my own Butterfly Pea plant. I am just lucky because my friend gave me some seeds last summer and I planted it a big container. We made a DIY trellis made up of small water pipes and wires so the vines has more places to climb.

Growing Clitoria Ternatea plant is just easy, it doesn't require so much, just a good soil and you're good to go. I planted them through seeds in our compost soil and in more than a week or two, there are already new sprouts. After almost two months, it started to have flowers already. Once it has started growing flowers, it will grow more everyday. :)

I used organic fertilizer on my plants like:
  • Crushed eggshells - rich in calcium which helps plants grow healthy and strong. It also reduce the acidity of the soil.
  • Rabbit manure  - a great fertilizer is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus, nutrients that plants need for healthy growth.
  • Banana peels - rich in potassium, phosphorus, and calcium. It also keeps the aphids away.
  • Rice water - (yung pinaghugasan ng bigas bago iluto). I actually don't know what are the actual benefits of using rice water on plants but based on experience, my plants and vegetables grows well and produce more fruits and as or the clitoria ternatea, it produces lots of flowers even some of my seedlings have started producing flowers in a month.
I've searched for the benefits or minerals our plants can get on rice water and I've found this post:
"Washing rice causes rice to lose up to 7% protein, 30% crude fiber, 15% free amino acids, 25% calcium (Ca), 47% total phosphorus (P), 47% iron (Fe), 11% zinc (Zn), 41% potassium (K), 59% thiamine, 26% riboflavin, and 60% niacin." Clitoria Ternatea, Blue Ternatea, Butterfly Pea, Asian Pigeon Wings, Blue Bell Vine, Blue Pea, Cordofan Pea and Darwin pea

Today, it gives us a lot of flowers which is more than what we can consume. So, I give some to my friends and family and let them try it too. :) They were so eager to try it when they knew about its benefits. ;)

Clitoria Ternatea is commonly used as tea, some calls it Blue Tea as the natural color of it's flower will fade when boiled or put on a hot water. The tea doesn't taste that bad and you can make a refeshing juice when you add lemon or calamsi and honey on the exctract that you collected from the flower.
Here's a reference of a study made on Clitoria Ternatea and it's beneits on its subject/s:
Clitoria ternatea , commonly known as Shankpushpi, is widely used in the traditional Indian system of medicine as a brain tonic and is believed to promote memory and intelligence. We examined the effectiveness of alcoholic extracts of aerial and root parts of C. ternatea at 300 and 500 mg/kg doses orally in rats in attenuating electroshock-induced amnesia. Extracts at 300 mg/kg dose produced significant memory retention, and the root parts were found to be more effective. [Source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21214440]
Treatment with 100 mg/kg of Clitoria ternatea aqueous root extract (CTR), for 30 days in neonatal and young adult age groups of rat, significantly increased acetylcholine (ACh) content in their hippocampi as compared to age matched controls. Increase in ACh content in their hippocampus may be the neurochemical basis for their improved learning and memory. [Source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12490229]

Herbal Steam Inhalation: Natural Home Remedy for Nasal Congestion

October 31, 2016 0 Comments
My daughter, Miel has colds and cough (due to postnasal drip) again last week. So, 3 days ago we tried to make a homemade remedy to ease stuffy nose or nasal congestion. It is a tip we had from our good neighbor by the way.

Oregano and Vicks Vaprub

Good thing we have a lot of Oregano plants in our front and backyard so we make use of it and picked a handful of leaves. We washed the Oregano leaves and crushed it, then we add boiling water and Vicks Vaporub. After we mixed them all, we let my daughter breathe in the steam for a while.

After the Herbal Steam Inhalation with Oregano and Vicks Vaporub, Miel still has cough and colds but the day after, she doesn't cough that much and today, she's okay and don't have cough and colds anymore. I think this herbal steam inhalation is really effective to ease stuffy nose and I guess for coughs too! And all we need are these 3 things: Oregano leaves, Boiling Water and Vicks Vaporub... :)

But, if you don't have Oregano, you can also try Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Thyme, Sage and Ginger (I haven't tried it though but if I'll have, I'll surely try it).

This is so easy and an effective home remedy, we were really surprised at how effective it was for us. I hope it can help others too that's why I blogged about this. :)

What worked for us might not worked for everyone, so if you're child is not feeling better, you can try to consult his/her Pediatrician to check him/her thoroughly... And by the way, when doing the Herbal Steam Inhalation, let your child stay still and be careful not to let your child play around because she/he might get hurt by the boiling/hot water.

Calamansi and Honey Juice - A Natural Way to Cure Cough and Colds

October 18, 2016 0 Comments
When I was still a kid, my grandmother would make us Calamansi and Honey juice whenever we have cough, colds, or both. It's natural and effective in our experience... Now that I became a mother, as much as I wanted to, I don't like my daughter to take a lot of medicines especially Antibiotics or Antibacterial medicines, but there's always an exception if worst comes to worst. If possible I try to make juices out of natural products like Calamansi and Honey

Both Honey and Calamansi has antibacterial and antiviral properties and calamansi is high in Vitamin C which is good for boosting our immune system. I don't have to worry letting my daughter drink calamansi and honey juice because it's natural and proven to be effective, in our experience. Unless your kid is allergic to any of the two, then you shouldn't let them take it.

Recently, Miel had cough and colds, so, we bought calamansi and honey. It's actually my first time to buy honey in the supermarket and it's also our first time to try the Mt. Apo Honey which is actually made in here Davao. We usually buy honey from our neighbor before but we just moved far away from the place we used to live, so I opted to buy honey in the supermarket instead. ;)

Anyway, I made Calamansi and Honey juice for my Miel and I hope her cough will be gone soon..

Protecting My Family From Dengue-Causing Mosquitoes

August 10, 2016 0 Comments
It's rainy season once again and there are so many cases of dengue in today's news and most of them are children. As a parent I can't help myself from worrying about this. I want to Protect my family from these Dengue-Causing mosquitoes.

First, What is Dengue?
Dengue is a debilitating viral disease of the tropics, transmitted by mosquitoes, and causing sudden fever and acute pains in the joints. [Source: www.google.com]
What causes Dengue fever?

The bite of an Aedes aegypti (yellow fever) mosquito, infected with any one of the four dengue viruses. When a mosquito bites a person infected with a dengue virus, the virus enters the mosquito. When the infected mosquito then bites another person, the virus enters that person's bloodstream.

What are the signs and symptoms?
  • Sudden onset of high fever which may last from 2 to 7 days.
  • Joint and muscle pain and pain behind the eyes
  • Weakness
  • Skin rashes
  • Nose-bleeding when fever starts to subside
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting of coffee-colored matter
  • Dark-colored stools
  • Difficulty of breathing
Treatment:
  • Do not give aspirin for fever.
  • Give sufficient amount of water or re-hydrate a dengue suspect.
  • If fver or symptoms persists for 2 or more days, bring the patient to teh nearest hospital.
Are there any ways to prevent and control dengue?

Here's a very helpful advisory from the Department of Health (www.doh.gov.ph): Follow the 4S against Dengue.

I hope everyone will participate in this fight against dengue...

As for our family, here's what we have tried to prevent from being bitten by mosquitoes. We use a spray (sometimes we use Baygon and sometimes Mortein), we've also tried mosquito repellent lotions from Off and Green Cross but it only lasts for 8 hours maximum.

So, we opted for the mosquito repellent patch  like Moskishield which is deet-free and lasts up to 24 hours and aside from that we also use the natural mosquito repellent which is also deet-free from Human Nature...

So far, those are the products that we have used and been using and I am quite satisfied with them. I hope that these Dengue-Causing Mosquitoes will be gone soon.

Children's Health at Risk Due to Haze

October 26, 2015 1 Comments
Because of the Haze on Indonesia, more nearby countries in South-East Asia have been affected and our country is one of them, the Philippines. This is alarming because it's putting not just the children's health at risk but all of the people who will be exposed to the haze. Most of the ones who are suffering are the children and babies whose immune system are still immature.

I've been seeing news about children who had been really affected by the haze, most especially the babies who had been exposed to this hazardous smoke. Some had lived while the others had suffered and died.

What causes the haze in Indonesia?
The haze is caused by farmers clearing land for plantations for the palm oil, pulp and paper industries, primarily in the Indonesian province of Kalimantan on Borneo and the island of Sumatra. [Source]
There are lots of flights that has been cancelled too due to this haze, not just here in Southern Mindanao but also countries like Singapore and Malaysia. There are also a lot of people in Indonesia who had suffered and died of acute respiratory tract infections. [Information on this website]

Now the haze already reached Davao City, our hometown. I've seen one post on Facebook by a Mom whose kids had been sick then after that a lot of moms have commented and shared that their toddlers and kids were sick too (cough, colds, allergies, asthma, etc.), I guess it's all because of this haze from Indonesia.

Because of this we have limited our outdoor activities and refrain from going outside especially for our daughter, Miel. My daughter currently has cough and colds too and she had allergies since she was a baby. I am worried that this haze could worsen her condition, so as much as possible we limit ourselves from going out and if we do, we let her wear a mask. We had to stick on our usual routine, home-day care-home and if possible just stay at home if there's no need to go outside. So for those parents who had kids who has history of asthma and other types of allergies, let your kids wear masks for their own safety. Here's the Department of Health (DOH) Health Advisory during Haze:

Stay Safe everyone! I hope and  pray that this Haze will end SOON!

Ceelin Plus - Our Children's "Shield" from Viruses

August 25, 2015 0 Comments
Times are different now. Pollution and climate change are worse. Viruses and diseases are stronger and more aggressive that it is easier for our kids to catch fever, cough, colds, etc. Most especially when our children are so active and loves to play outdoors and mingle with other children who are sick, it would then be easier for them to catch the virus too.

Because of changing times, immunity should be the topmost priority and non-negotiable health benefit of every parent. As a mom, I always give my daughter anything and everything to protect her from any sickness and diseases caused by viruses. I always give her healthy food and drinks like vegetables, fruits, biscuits, milk, etc. which are essential for her growing needs and to keep her healthy too. But since times are different now, these are not enough. That's why I always give my daughter, Ceelin Plus everyday for superior protection. She's the one who keeps on reminding me to give her vitamins everyday and  she loved the apple flavor. :)

Ang batang naka-Ceelin Plus, may Proteksyong Plus! :)

Ceelin Plus has Vitamin C PLUS Zinc for Proteksyong Plus. With Ceelin Plus there’s another layer of protection – the first one is the Ceelin helmet which stands for Vitamin C. The additional layer (Plus) is the shield which represents Zinc.

Vitamin C and Zinc found in Ceelin Plus can actually reduce severity and shorten bout of sickness. Imagine what it can do if it’s used every day – it can really protect our children from getting sick.

Furthermore, Ceelin Plus has an advantage over other Vitamin C and Zinc products. It has ZincPlus technology which ensures the correct levels of Vitamin C and Zinc; so, the child is assured of superior protection. Ceelin Plus is a product of Unilab.
