Herbal Steam Inhalation: Natural Home Remedy for Nasal Congestion

My daughter, Miel has colds and cough (due to postnasal drip) again last week. So, 3 days ago we tried to make a homemade remedy to ease stuffy nose or nasal congestion. It is a tip we had from our good neighbor by the way. 

Oregano and Vicks Vaprub

Good thing we have a lot of Oregano plants in our front and backyard so we make use of it and picked a handful of leaves. We washed the Oregano leaves and crushed it, then we add boiling water and Vicks Vaporub. After we mixed them all, we let my daughter breathe in the steam for a while.

After the Herbal Steam Inhalation with Oregano and Vicks Vaporub, Miel still has cough and colds but the day after, she doesn't cough that much and today, she's okay and don't have cough and colds anymore. I think this herbal steam inhalation is really effective to ease stuffy nose and I guess for coughs too! And all we need are these 3 things: Oregano leaves, Boiling Water and Vicks Vaporub... :)

But, if you don't have Oregano, you can also try Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Thyme, Sage and Ginger (I haven't tried it though but if I'll have, I'll surely try it).

This is so easy and an effective home remedy, we were really surprised at how effective it was for us. I hope it can help others too that's why I blogged about this. :)

What worked for us might not worked for everyone, so if you're child is not feeling better, you can try to consult his/her Pediatrician to check him/her thoroughly... And by the way, when doing the Herbal Steam Inhalation, let your child stay still and be careful not to let your child play around because she/he might get hurt by the boiling/hot water.

Calamansi and Honey Juice - A Natural Way to Cure Cough and Colds

When I was still a kid, my grandmother would make us Calamansi and Honey juice whenever we have cough, colds, or both. It's natural and effective in our experience... Now that I became a mother, as much as I wanted to, I don't like my daughter to take a lot of medicines especially Antibiotics or Antibacterial medicines, but there's always an exception if worst comes to worst. If possible I try to make juices out of natural products like Calamansi and Honey

Both Honey and Calamansi has antibacterial and antiviral properties and calamansi is high in Vitamin C which is good for boosting our immune system. I don't have to worry letting my daughter drink calamansi and honey juice because it's natural and proven to be effective, in our experience. Unless your kid is allergic to any of the two, then you shouldn't let them take it.

Recently, Miel had cough and colds, so, we bought calamansi and honey. It's actually my first time to buy honey in the supermarket and it's also our first time to try the Mt. Apo Honey which is actually made in here Davao. We usually buy honey from our neighbor before but we just moved far away from the place we used to live, so I opted to buy honey in the supermarket instead. ;)

Anyway, I made Calamansi and Honey juice for my Miel and I hope her cough will be gone soon..

Protecting My Family From Dengue-Causing Mosquitoes

It's rainy season once again and there are so many cases of dengue in today's news and most of them are children. As a parent I can't help myself from worrying about this. I want to Protect my family from these Dengue-Causing mosquitoes.

First, What is Dengue?   
Dengue is a debilitating viral disease of the tropics, transmitted by mosquitoes, and causing sudden fever and acute pains in the joints. [Source: www.google.com]
What causes Dengue fever?

The bite of an Aedes aegypti (yellow fever) mosquito, infected with any one of the four dengue viruses. When a mosquito bites a person infected with a dengue virus, the virus enters the mosquito. When the infected mosquito then bites another person, the virus enters that person's bloodstream.

What are the signs and symptoms?
  • Sudden onset of high fever which may last from 2 to 7 days.
  • Joint and muscle pain and pain behind the eyes
  • Weakness
  • Skin rashes
  • Nose-bleeding when fever starts to subside
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting of coffee-colored matter
  • Dark-colored stools
  • Difficulty of breathing
Treatment: 
  • Do not give aspirin for fever.
  • Give sufficient amount of water or re-hydrate a dengue suspect.
  • If fver or symptoms persists for 2 or more days, bring the patient to teh nearest hospital.

I hope everyone will participate in this fight against dengue...

As for our family, here's what we have tried to prevent from being bitten by mosquitoes. We use a spray (sometimes we use Baygon and sometimes Mortein), we've also tried mosquito repellent lotions from Off and Green Cross but it only lasts for 8 hours maximum.


So, we opted for the mosquito repellent patch  like Moskishield which is deet-free and lasts up to 24 hours and aside from that we also use the natural mosquito repellent which is also deet-free from Human Nature...

So far, those are the products that we have used and been using and I am quite satisfied with them. I hope that these Dengue-Causing Mosquitoes will be gone soon.

The Sexy Chef Cooking Demo at Abreeza Mall

I am not a good cook and I still have a lot to learn but I am trying my best to cook for my family. As much as possible, I want them to eat healthy foods, especially my little one. So, I was so excited when I got an opportunity to attend a healthy cooking demo with The Sexy Chef Barni Alejandro-Rennebeck and her sister Rachel Alejandro at the Abreeza Mall last Saturday, March 22, 2014.


I have learned a lot from them and also learned a few of their recipes that they've shared during their cooking demo. Four of the recipes that they've shared are also in their book The Sexy Chef Cookbook which are the following:

Malunggay Shrimp Fried Rice



Stir-fry Korean-Style Noodles


Tofu "EGG" SALAD Tea Sandwiches



Romain Salad with Cranberries, Pine nuts and Pesto Vinaigrette

One day, I will try these healthy recipes. I just hope my little one would eat it, hehehe... I also bought cucumbers a while ago so I can try the cucumber juice. You just blend the cucumber and drink it's juice everyday and it will help flatten your tummy. So, for everyone who wants to get rid of their belly fats (like me), try to drink cucumber juice everyday. It can also clear out the toxins in our body. ;)

Infused Water - Citrus Water (Lemon, Lime and Orange)

I've chanced upon a page in Facebook where it shares a lot of healthy tips for its followers and I just happened to be one of them. It's my first time to have learned about these "infused water" there, where you would add fresh fruits, herbs or vegetables in the water. There are lots of examples on the list like these combinations:


  • Green tea, mint and lime - fat burning, digestion, headaches, congestion and breath freshener.
  • Strawberry and kiwi - cardiovascular health, immune system protection, blood sugar regulation,  and digestion.
  • Cucumber, lime and lemon - water weight management, bloating, appetite control, hydration,  and digestion.
I wanted to try the Citrus Water which is the Lemon, Lime and Orange combination (should be at room temperature). It aids in digestion, lots of  vitamin C, for skin care, immune defense and heartburn. This flavor infused water can also help us clean the toxins in our bodies, which is also the main reason why I tried this one.

What do you need to make a Lemon, Lime and Orange Infused Water? Just simple, you will only need: 1 Large Orange, 1 Large Lime, 1 Large Lemon (our lemons here are not that big, so I used around 10 small lemons, hehehe), I sliced them all and add them in 2 liters of water and serve after 30 minutes. :)

Note: Do not keep longer than 48 hours. You can put more water using the same fruit, but discard after 48 hours.

Helpful Exercise During Pregnancy

Having a regular exercise is very important to all the expectant mothers out there. Even a simple walking for 30 minutes is already good for you. Here's a helpful video I have found on YouTube: How to Exercise when Pregnant.


Note: Please refer to your OB/GYN (OBstetrics and GYNecology) before doing any of these exercises mentioned here.

Good posture must be maintained all throughout pregnancy. The temptation to slouch is strong, especially during the last trimester, when baby’s weigh pulls the abdomen forward. Compensating by leaning backward puts undue stress on her back. High heels make things worse. However, a proper posture is not enough. A pregnant woman needs exercise more than ever to keep fit, prevent the development of varicose veins by improving circulation, and make labor a little easier. Here are some Helpful Exercise During Pregnancy:

Squatting

From a standing position, sit down until your knees are fully bent and you are balanced on the balls of your feet. Do about 10 repetitions at a time. (For support, you can hold on to a chair and place a 4-cm-thick piece of wood or a rolled-up rug under your heels.)

Leg Exercise

1. Sit down and draw imaginary circles with your big toe by turning the ankles clockwise, then counter-clockwise. Do about 10 repetitions in each direction. Do the same with the other foot.
2. Alternately point your toes up then forward (forming a straight line from knee to toe). Do about 10 repetitions for each toe.

Pelvic Tilts

Get down on your hands and knees, and keep your back flat. Then simultaneously draw in your abdomen, tighten your buttocks, tilt your hips forward, and exhale. Do about 10 repetitions.
